Exotic wagers like Exactas, Trifectas, Superfectas, and Super High 5s can get expensive fast, especially with Box and Key Wheel strategies. The Cost Calculator shows you the exact dollar amount before you commit. Pick your wager type, choose a strategy (Straight, Box, Key Box, or Key Wheel), select your horses, and see the total cost update instantly. No guesswork, no surprises at the window.
Daily Doubles, Pick 3s, Pick 4s, and Pick 6s require covering the right combinations without blowing your budget. The Spread Ticket builder lets you classify horses into A (top picks), B (contenders), and C (longshots) tiers for each leg, then set multipliers to control how many tickets are generated at each coverage level. The result is an optimized set of tickets that concentrates your money on the most likely outcomes while still covering enough to catch a price.
When used alongside the E-Z Win® Form, the calculator pulls horse names and tier ratings directly from the race card. The Big ’Un button auto-fills selections based on our handicapping tiers, and Auto-Load classifies horses into A/B/C for spread tickets using your E-Z Win® ratings. You can also copy generated tickets directly into your race notes.
Costs, wager types, and strategies for using the calculator.
The E-Z Win Calculator is available to Clubhouse and Winner's Circle members and has two tools in one:
When used from the E-Z Win® Form, the calculator auto-loads horse names and tier ratings from the race card, no retyping needed.
A Trifecta requires picking the first three finishers in exact order. A Box covers every possible ordering of the horses you select, so the cost is the base bet multiplied by the number of permutations:
Most tracks offer a $0.50 base bet, which halves these numbers (a 4-horse Trifecta Box at $0.50 base is $12). The Cost Calculator shows the total instantly for any base bet and horse count.
The general formula: cost = base bet × n × (n − 1) × (n − 2) where n is the number of horses in the box.
Both are ways to cover multiple horses in an exotic wager, but they make very different bets:
The Cost Calculator supports all four strategies side by side so you can compare the cost of each approach before deciding.
The cost of an exotic wager is your base bet multiplied by the number of combinations the bet covers. Combinations depend on the wager type and how many horses you select:
Multi-race wagers (Pick 3, Pick 4, Pick 5, Pick 6) multiply the number of horses across each leg. A Pick 4 with 3-2-4-2 horses across the four legs is 3 × 2 × 4 × 2 = 48 combinations.
Minimum base bets vary by wager type and track: most exactas and trifectas allow $0.50 or $1, superfectas often allow $0.10, and Pick 4/5/6 wagers usually allow $0.50 or $1. The Cost Calculator handles all of these automatically.
For a definition of each wager type and how the payouts work, see our guide to horse racing wager types.
A Superfecta requires picking the first four finishers in exact order. A Superfecta Box covers every ordering of the horses you select:
Most tracks offer a $0.10 minimum on Superfectas, so a 4-horse box is $2.40 and a 6-horse box is $36. Costs scale fast, which is why Key Box and Key Wheel strategies are popular alternatives for spreading without breaking the budget.
The general formula: combinations = n × (n − 1) × (n − 2) × (n − 3) where n is the number of horses in the box.
Multi-race wagers are where the tier system really shines. The general strategy is to use fewer horses in races with a clear top tier and spread wider in competitive races:
Clubhouse and Winner's Circle members can use the Spread Tickets calculator to build their ticket: classify horses into A (top picks), B (contenders), and C (longshots) for each leg, set multipliers to control coverage, and it generates an optimized set of tickets that concentrates your money on the most likely outcomes while still covering enough to catch a price.
